The business visitor visa is for individuals who wish to enter the UK in order to undertake permitted short-term business-related activities.

As the business visit visa route falls within the standard visitor visa category, business visitors will only be permitted to travel to the UK for short periods upto a maximum period of 6 months. Read more to find out whether you’re eligible for a business visitor visa, what documents you might need, and how we at Latitude Law can help you.

What is a UK Business Visa?

If you’re a visa national, meaning you’re from the list of countries that require a visa to enter the UK, you will be required to apply for a visit visa prior to entering the UK.

Visitors to the UK are generally prohibited from carrying out “work activities” and also from receiving payment from any UK source, unless the planned activities fall within the specific permissions contained within Appendix Visitor of the Immigration Rules – Permitted Activities.

With a Business Visit Visa, you can visit the UK for up to 6 months at any one time to do the following business activities:

  • Attend interviews, meetings, conferences and seminars
  • Negotiate and sign deals and contracts
  • Attend trade fairs to promote your business (you cannot sell things)
  • Get work-related training if you’re employed overseas and the training is not available in your home country
  • Give a one-off or short series of talks as long as they’re not for profit or a commercial event - you can only be paid for speaking at certain engagements or events (a ‘permitted paid engagement’)
  • Carry out site visits and inspections
  • Oversee the delivery of goods and services provided by a UK company to your overseas company or organisation
  • Deliver training or share knowledge on internal projects with UK employees of the company you work for overseas
  • Install, dismantle, repair, service or advise on equipment, computer software and hardware, if your overseas company has a contract with a UK company or organisation

What documents do you need for a business visitor visa?

First of all, you must have a passport or travel document to enter the UK. It should be valid for the whole of your stay.

You must also be able to provide documentary evidence to demonstrate:

  • Proof of business activity - This could be letters or correspondence from a UK based business you aim to visit.
  • Financial support documents - You need to prove that you’re able to pay in full for your trip, or that somebody else is able and willing to pay for it.

How to apply for a UK business visitor visa

There are a few steps in applying for a UK business visitor visa:

  1. Determine eligibility - You need to be a qualified professional, with a secured job offer which meets minimum salary requirements.
  2. Gather relevant documents - Gather all the documents (mentioned previously) which are needed for your business visa application.
  3. Submit application - Apply for your UK business visitor visa through the online business visitor portal. You’ll also need to book a biometric appointment at a visa application center to prove your identity.
  4. Await results - Generally, you should hear a decision on your application within 3 weeks, but you can opt to pay additional fees for faster processing.

Applying for a business visa is a highly complicated process, which is made slower and less likely to succeed with a low quality application. Failed applications also reduce your chance for success further down the line.

As a result, we’d recommend working alongside a specialist UK immigration Law Firm to increase your chance of a successful first time application.
